What to know before First Class
Dear Parents of new students,
Dancing on the Spectrum is so excited to meet our dancers this week! We realize a new activity brings new routines; we’d love to help make your child’s first class go as smoothly as possible. Here are some tips for success.
Arrive Early. We recommend getting to the studio about 10 minutes early, so your child can begin to get comfortable in the new environment. This also gives you enough time to park, take your dancer to the bathroom and get shoes on.
Use the Bathroom before class. Please help your child get in the habit of using the bathroom before class — to wash hands and try to go potty. Your dancer’s teacher will remind students of this too, but your support will really help.
Communicate expectations. Please talk with your child by telling him/her that parents only get to watch outside the studio and that our dancers are the ones who get to come in and dance right away. Let your child know where you will be during class (in the lobby or away from the studio). We find our students do better without parents in the room – please watch discretely so as not to distract your dancer.
Label everything. Please write your child’s name or initials on the outside bottom of each ballet slipper. If your dancer is in a ballet/tap class, please write their name on their tap shoes as well. Permanent pens work well. We will have them available in the lobby before class.
Be ready to dance:
Be sure to check the studio’s dress code that follows. Dancers should be dressed in the appropriate dance clothes and shoes for class. If your dancer needs to change at the studio, make sure to leave enough time for them to change and be on time for class. Remember to bring a water bottle.
Boys-Shorts and a T shirt with proper shoes for class. Black Tap shoes for tap class. Sneakers ,black jazz shoes or dance sneakers for jazz and hip-hop
Girls– Please have hair securely pulled away from face and off neck, Ponytails or buns will be easiest. Please wear one of the following, leotard with legging, ballet skirt or active-wear. Proper shoes for girls will be as follows.
Tutus, Tap Shoes and all the Jazz –Please arrive in tan tap shoes and have pink ballet Slippers to change into.
Little Big Shots Jazz and Hip Hop-Tan Jazz Shoes or black dance sneakers.
Spectrum Pop Stars-Pink Ballet Slippers
Movers and Shakers-Either Pink Ballet Slippers or Barefoot.
Ballet slippers and Tap shoes can be found at Walmart or Payless Shoes Stores, while Jazz shoes and dance sneakers can be purchased at Attitude Dance Wear located at 9621 Westview Drive, Coral Springs 33076.
Keep in mind that new situations can be challenging for everyone, especially preschool students. Do not worry if your dancer chooses to watch class on the first day, or gets emotional when you leave. This is very normal, and our experienced teachers know how to set your dancer at ease. Please help your dancer focus by keeping younger siblings away from the door/out of the studio.
As always, if you have any questions, please reach out to us at Michele@dancingonthespectrum.com. We are so excited to dance with you this season!
Thank You, and Keep Dancing!
